Quote of the Week 3-23-2026
“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different”
NEWS
Welcome back friends! Little rant for this week’s blog. I knew very early that I was different. Big orange head, didn’t come from money like a lot of my friends, different sense of humor, the works. At first, that felt strange but as you guys know I have clearly embraced my uniqueness and now pride myself on it.
I knew when I first opened this place 15 years ago that it would be different. At the time, Planet Fitness was sweeping the USA with their 10 bucks a month, hope you don’t show up, no barbells, lunk alarm plan. Man, oh man was I going to be different than that. We were barbells and stones and tireflips. We had real, legitimate training. I remember years later when the CrossFit movement started to pick up speed, all the other gyms around the country were embracing this strange, paramilitary, “forging elite fitness” mentality and programming. I just couldn’t sign on to that. I believe my grandma should deadlift and my kids should squat, not just elite powerlifters and gymnasts. Strength is for everyone. I never cared to cater to the firebreathers at the expense of our general athletes. Over time, this bore out in my favor- many supposed “high end” CrossFitters went elsewhere, got hurt or injured, burned out, and left the sport. Meanwhile my crew stayed- some of them for a decade and a half! I am crazy proud of that.
So what is different now? First off, the stranglehold CrossFit once had on the functional fitness microgym community is gone. Hyrox is the next wave which will soon be replaced by something else…and on and on and on. This is why what we do- the uniqueness of our place, is SO damn important and can not be replaced. Secondly, I see all these gyms smashing facebook and instagram ads. Every single fitness facility is using the same AI generated BS to try to scrape out potential customers. Honestly- I am grossed out by the whole thing. I recently looked back on our Instagram conversations; 15 years of DMs. Anyone want to take a guess on how many clients we got through Insta alone? 12. Less than one a year. Our people come to us through you guys- strong referrals and word of mouth from people who trust us. Not digital slop. So moving forward, I’m calling it: that’s not worth our time. We’re doubling down on what actually works- Coaching real people, building real relationships, and creating a place that people want to be part of. No gimmicks. No trends. No pretending to be something we’re not. Just us. Trends come and go. What we’ve built doesn’t.
Social media sucks, F AI, life’s short, lift heavy, go to the gym.
