Quote of the Week 9-21-2026
“What we do now echoes through what remains of our character”
NEWS
Welcome back friends! This week I wanted to chat with you guys about how fitness really is simpler than people make it. Everywhere I look, people are chasing novelty, the amount of stupid crap I see people doing on Instagram is absolutely insane. A new workout trend, new supplement, new recovery gadget, new challenge, new “hack”, new way to make fitness seem more complicated than it actually is. And the funny thing is, most people would probably make more progress by doing a few very basic things consistently. Real fitness is not mysterious. It is actually damn simple. Ready folks?..
Eat Real Food. Start there. Eat mostly real, whole foods. Meat. Eggs. Fruit. Vegetables. Potatoes. Rice. Foods that look like food. You do not need a perfect diet. You do not need to eliminate every carb. You do not need some exotic supplement stack. You need to eat enough protein, eat quality foods most of the time, and stop pretending that nutrition has to be complicated. Simple does not mean easy, it just means simple.
Walk More. Get your damn steps in. Walking might be the least exciting fitness advice on earth but it is also one of the most useful. Walk after dinner, park farther away, take the stairs, go outside, move throughout the day, touch some damn grass. You do not need every bit of movement to be a WOD but a lot of health is simply avoiding being sedentary aka a lazy pos.
Get Strong. Lift weights. Heavy ones. And again, this does not need to be complicated. Bench press, Squat, Deadlift, Overhead press, Pull-ups, Dips. Do those things for years. Add weight when you can. Improve your technique. Build some muscle and get stronger. There is a reason these movements have survived every fitness trend that has come and gone- they work.
Instagram fitness really needs to stop needing everything to be new. Novelty is fun, and I like variety too. We use plenty of different movements and workouts at Red Woods Fitness because training should be enjoyable. But variety should serve the training. Training should not exist just to provide novelty. There is a big difference. If you change everything every week, it becomes very difficult to measure progress. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is repeat the same movement, get better at it, and slowly improve over time. That may not make a great social media video…but it builds real fitness.
Boring works! Some of the best things you can do for your health are incredibly boring. Sleep enough, eat real food, walk, lift heavy things, do some conditioning, repeat. That is not a very exciting sales pitch. Nobody gets rich selling the idea that you should squat consistently for the next ten years. But that does not make it any less true. And look, there are no secret exercises. I see this nonsense at other gyms all the time. The fitness industry has a strange habit of making people believe they are always missing something. The secret movement. The secret diet. The secret program. The secret supplement. Most of the time, you are not missing anything. You probably just need more consistency.
Do the basics. Do them well. Do them long enough for them to work.
At Red Woods Fitness, we are never going to avoid new ideas simply because they are new. Good coaching means continuing to learn. But we are also never going to chase something just because it is trendy. If it works, we will use it. If it does not, we will not. And underneath everything we do will always be the same fundamentals: Eat real food. Move every day. Get strong. Build your engine. Be consistent. Fitness can be complicated if you want it to be…but it does not have to be. Sometimes the answer really is that simple.
